What is MAC?
MAC or Make-Up Art Cosmetics is a Canadian brand, that was created by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo. The idea behind the brand, was to create makeup products , that would look good during photo shoots. Interestingly enough, the first batch of MAC makeup was homemade and was sold to professional makeup artists and photographers.
Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour was my first MAC product. I was out shopping on my birthday, when I saw the beautiful ad, that promised “a splash of colour in a liquid-suede finish that lingers.”. Liquid lipsticks were still trending and not as many brands had them in their range, so I was immediately drawn.
Having heard a lot about MAC before, I thought that I might as well get my first liquid lipstick from a brand that can “do no wrong”. Looking back, I really should have gone for their normal lipsticks instead.
I chose the colour “High Drama”, a deep dark plum, which was perfect for the winter season we were in then. I was already imagining myself rocking the deep dark matte lip, that would make me look mysterious and alluring. So as soon as I got home, I got it out of its box and applied it.
And boy, was I disappointed. To this day I still can’t believe how bad the formulae of this lipstick is!
When you apply it, it feels exactly like paint would. Immediately drying and crunchy, my lips felt stiff and absolutely horrible. But it’s not just that! The pigmentation is just not there.
The lipstick is streaky and when you try to build it, so that you don’t have patchy lips, it simply moves around and looks worse and worse! All this for 20 euros?!
Dark colours are hard enough to apply when the formulae is perfect, so you can only imagine what a mess it was applying the Retro Matte. Even on the swatch above, it is visible, that the colour payoff is not even.
Overall, I would not recommend this lipstick to anyone! There are so many similar types of product for a much cheaper price and definitely a much better formulae. I love MAC’s regular lipsticks and many other of their products, but this was a completely failure in my opinion.
